When apprehended she admitted to breaking the rules and misusing her position while on the job.
The governor of Wandsworth prison, Andrew Davy, said her actions damaged years of work done by female staff to gain respect in the all-male prison. He also said many female staff now feel unsafe and are harassed more often by inmates.
The court found that Abreu’s misconduct happened more than once. Another recording showed her performing a sex act on the same inmate, using a prison-issued camera. She also admitted to having sexual relations with the inmate at another time.
Judge Martin Edmunds KC said this wasn’t a one-time mistake but part of repeated bad behavior.
The Prison Service said most staff are honest, but they are working harder to catch those who break the rules. They promised to take strong action against anyone who doesn’t meet their standards.
