Violent protests erupted in China’s Shaanxi province following the death of a teenage boy, sparking allegations of a government cover-up.

Footage shows protesters clashing with riot police outside Pucheng Vocational Technical School, with some demonstrators throwing objects, including a fire extinguisher that shattered a glass door. Police responded by beating protesters and forcefully subduing others.

The unrest was triggered by the death of a third-year student, identified by the surname Dang, on January 2. Authorities claim Dang’s death was accidental, citing a late-night altercation in his dormitory followed by a fall from a window. However, widespread skepticism and accusations of foul play have gained traction on social media.

An official statement posted on the Pucheng county government’s website described events leading to Dang’s death, stating he had argued with a first-year student and that a wooden stool and open window were found near the scene.

Activist group Human Rights in China has disputed this narrative, citing witness accounts of “signs of a struggle” in Dang’s dormitory and claims he may have been pushed from the roof. Dang’s family also refutes the official explanation, alleging his phone data was tampered with.

The protests, which began Monday, highlight ongoing tensions in China following the “White Paper” demonstrations of late 2022, which opposed strict COVID-19 policies. Attempts to contact local public security authorities in Pucheng and Weinan city have gone unanswered, leaving questions about the incident and the protests’ status unresolved.
