A retired nurse and member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Eredo Local Council Development Area, Mrs Oladunjoye Stella Odufisan says provocative and indecent dressing can’t be overlooked in attempts to address the issue of rape.
Oladunjoye made the controversial stance in an interview with Ekohotblog on the sideline of the celebration of 100 days in office by Poka Youths Development Association, Poka, Epe.
She also made her position known on variety of social issues such as drug abuse and addiction and scourge of rape.
She countered the notion that the high level of drug intake by the youths is responsible for the menace of rape cases, sexual molestation and harassment in the society.
She stated that the argument advanced in support of drug intake being the major cause of rape does not hold water, adding that drug abuse and addiction aren’t the main factors responsible for for the pervasiveness of sexual harassment.
She averred that the style of dressing among young girls and ladies plays a huge role in sexual assault as their provocative and indecent dressing make them susceptible to rape.
” If we are going to be sincere with ourselves, it may be a contributing factor but at the same time, it is not the major factor. The way girls or ladies dress these days predisposes them to rape cases. If you go on the street, you can see a girl of 18-20 years dressing in a way we as mothers can not comprehend.
“They said we are in a civilized world but that’s not the case because most of these dressing doesn’t justify what or who we are.
“Our highly conservative culture does not permit it. Most of the countries referred to as civilized worlds have harsh weather and climatic conditions that contribute to their mode of dressing. Our weather here is not that crazy for a lady to dress half-naked. Once you dress half-naked as a girl, you are predisposing yourself to rape. Moreso, skimpy dresses are worn, a boy or man will want to see what’s underneath” she said.
She, however, urged mothers, parents and guardians and elders in the society to rise to the challenge to save the female gender from incessant rape by correcting their mode of indecent dressing whenever the occasion arises. She averred that ladies and young girls were responsible for attracting rapists to themselves through unsolicited touching, improper sitting position, adorning their body with skimpy outfits and the likes. She also noted how who has been able to curb such trend in her community by sending erring girls back home to dress properly.
“Most mothers should encourage our female children to know how to dress, the way they sit at times are wrong. You’ll see ladies sit down and you will see what is underneath them which is not the best. I can tell you some ladies will want to attract men with the way they expose their body and by so doing, these men think the best way to gain entrance is by rape. So, I think some of these ladies or girls apply for it.

“It is hard to see a decent, modest, cultured and well-mannered girl raped. Touching the opposite sex arbitrarily is also a bad habit when in a gathering, avoid touching the opposite sex unnecessarily as it propels the mindset towards having sex.
” We mothers, guardians and even elderly people have huge roles to play. Regardless of our relationship with young girls, we should learn to correct them so that they can know how to dress modestly and prevent them from rape. Our youths must be conscious of their dressing. Our girls should be mannered enough to know what to do “, she stated
