Following allegations of homosexuality that circulated widely online, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended two ministers, Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa.
An internal memo dated October 28, 2024, and signed by RCCG National Overseer Pastor Sunday Akande, outlines the decision to temporarily relieve the ministers of their duties while an investigation is conducted.
In the memo, Pastor Akande emphasized the church’s commitment to biblical principles, stating, “Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, and we must address these allegations with the seriousness they deserve,” he stated.

“The holiness-preaching church has been firm in maintaining traditional interpretations of scripture, particularly on moral issues.
“The RCCG’s stance on homosexuality is rooted in passages such as Leviticus 18:22, which refers to same-sex relations as an “abomination,” and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which warns that the “unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God.
“For RCCG, adhering to these principles is seen as a core part of its mission,” Akande further noted.
The memo instructed that a thorough investigation into the allegations should be conducted with confidentiality and respect for all parties involved, aiming to conclude within two weeks. During this time, AdeBello, Mayowa, and any others implicated are required to refrain from participating in church activities.
Pastor Akande clarified that the suspension is a precautionary measure pending the investigation’s outcome, stressing, “This is a matter of integrity and adherence to our values.”
This incident marks not the first time RCCG has grappled with doctrinal adherence issues. As one of Nigeria’s largest Christian organizations, the church has a history of addressing challenges it perceives as contrary to its values, emphasizing discipline and strict adherence to its interpretation of biblical morality.
The results of the investigation are anticipated to influence RCCG’s approach to similar matters in the future, signaling a reaffirmation of its commitment to its doctrines in the face of changing societal norms.
