Nigerian music star, Rema opens up on giving up a chance to further his academic pursuit in UNILAG.
According to the musician, it was a dream of his mother to complete his education.
However, he explains the ASUU strike set things in a different perspective for him.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Nigerian musician, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has disclosed why he abandoned his admission to the University of Lagos. In January 2022, the singer announced that he had gained admission to fulfill his mother’s wish for him to complete his education.
However, in a recent interview with iHeartRadio, Rema revealed that he had to abandon the admission because the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on an eight-month strike, which brought academic activities to a halt in Nigeria.
According to Rema, he had already strategized how to balance schooling and touring, but the strike made it impossible for him to pursue both. As a result, he had to bail on the admission.
“I got admission last year, but I bailed on it because the school went on strike. All schools went on strike in Nigeria. I wanted to really strategize schooling and touring. The whole strike made it awkward. It was like glitches,” he said.
Despite this setback, Rema confirmed that he has no plans to leave Nigeria, adding that he loves staying connected to his roots. The musician revealed that he finds it helpful to come back to where it all started from so that he doesn’t forget his origin.
“I live in Nigeria, still in Nigeria. I am sticking with the roots. I don’t plan to leave outside of Africa. I like staying connected to the roots. I also want to stay close to family. It is always good to come back to where it started from. It is helpful so I don’t forget,” he said.
Rema is a fast-rising Nigerian musician who has become popular for his unique sound and style. He has released several hit singles such as “Dumebi,” “Woman,” “Ginger Me,” and “Bounce.”
