The House of Representatives will march against gender-based violence on Monday as part of activities marking the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

House spokesman Akintunde Rotimi announced that the march, involving over 1,000 participants, will begin at the National Assembly and end at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters.

The demonstration aims to highlight the commitment of lawmakers to end gender-based violence and demand accountability for perpetrators.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Rotimi stated, “This march is a powerful statement of solidarity. We will submit a petition to the Inspector General of Police, urging decisive action to protect vulnerable populations and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.”

In addition to the march, the House has planned activities to sustain awareness during the 16 Days of Activism. On Tuesday, November 26, lawmakers will wear orange sashes during plenary sessions to symbolize solidarity in the fight against gender-based violence.

A strategic meeting will also be held on December 9, bringing together Speakers of State Houses of Assembly to discuss legislative measures to combat gender-based violence nationwide. This will be followed by the National Citizens’ Summit and GBV Conference 2024 on December 10.

The House reiterated its commitment to raising awareness, driving legislative initiatives, and ensuring accountability in the fight against gender-based violence.
