The House of Representatives marked the International Day of the Girl Child with a symbolic gesture on Thursday as Speaker Tajudeen Abbas handed over his seat to 16-year-old gender advocate, Isabel Anani, to preside over a special session.
This annual event, observed globally on October 11 and declared by the United Nations, highlights the challenges faced by girls worldwide and celebrates their resilience and potential.

Speaker Abbas, before vacating his seat, praised the significance of investing in the education and empowerment of girls, emphasizing their vital role in shaping the future.
The session, organized by Plan International Nigeria, saw Anani oversee the presentation of a motion titled “Commemoration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child,” moved by Kafilat Ogbara of Kosofe Federal Constituency and seconded by House spokesman Akin Rotimi.
In her address, Anani called for a future where girls have equal opportunities, access to education, and healthcare, and are empowered to thrive in male-dominated fields like STEM and politics.
She also stressed the need for addressing issues like gender discrimination, violence, and harmful practices that hinder the progress of girls.
The House adopted the motion, urging government agencies to collaborate with schools and communities to combat drug abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle.
Additionally, the lawmakers called for increased efforts to educate out-of-school girls and proposed amending the Child’s Rights Act to better protect s3xually abused children and pass key bills promoting gender equality.
