The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has condemned the national convention held in Ibadan on Saturday, branding it unlawful and insisting that any decisions taken will not be recognized.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the state party, through its Publicity Secretary Kenneth Yowika, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for staying away from the event, noting that the move upheld democratic principles and respect for the rule of law.

The party highlighted that two Federal High Courts had issued injunctions preventing the PDP from holding the convention, although an Ibadan High Court permitted the gathering.

Despite the conflicting rulings, the convention went ahead, electing new national officers and dissolving certain state-level executives.
Yowika described the Ibadan event as a “sham,” criticising the apparent disregard for existing court orders. He emphasized that INEC’s adherence to the Federal High Court rulings demonstrated proper respect for legal and democratic norms.
Expressing confidence in the judiciary, Rivers PDP stated that the convention’s resolutions would likely be overturned by a competent court. Party members were urged to remain composed and trust the legal process.

“The ill-advised convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny as it is already sub judice at the Court of Appeal. We rest our faith solely on the judiciary and urge all members to do the same,” the statement concluded.
The Rivers PDP’s position signals continuing tension within the party ahead of upcoming political contests, with factional disputes and legal battles shaping the national leadership landscape.
