Under coach Thomas Tuchel, the Three Lions made several changes to the lineup that beat Croatia 4–2, and later introduced key attacking players including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers and Marcus Rashford in search of a breakthrough.

Despite late pressure, England were unable to find a way through, with their best chance coming when a header from Djed Spence struck the crossbar before Harry Kane missed the rebound.
