- Victor Edoro: Removed in 2016 by 16 of the 24 members for alleged highhandedness and financial recklessness; succeeded by Elizabeth Ativie, the meeting’s first female speaker.
- Bamidele Oloyelogun: was impeached in November 2018 along with his deputy, Oladeji Iroju, by 18 of the 26 members on grounds of serious misconduct.
- Chinedum Orji: Removed in May 2023 after 18 of the 24 members signed for his ouster.
On Monday, the Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed a significant shift in its leadership as Mudashiru Obasa was impeached as Speaker.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Obasa’s removal was attributed to gross misconduct and abuse of office, follows a pattern of Speakers being ousted from the Assembly since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Following Obasa’s impeachment, the Assembly promptly swore in Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker.

Meranda, who previously served as the Deputy Speaker, has become the first woman to hold this position in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Below is a list of the allegations:
Anambra State
Rita Maduagwu: Impeached in November 2018 by 22 of the 30 members of the State Assembly.
Borno State
Goni Ali Modu: Removed in February 2012 for alleged subservience to the state government.
Plateau stands
Abok Ayuba: Was ousted by 16 of the 24 members in October 2021 after long-standing rivalry with former governor, Simon Lalong.
Niger state
Adamu Usman: ousted in May 2015 by 18 of the 27 members; replaced by Isa Kawu.
Edo state
Victor Edoro: Removed in 2016 by 16 of the 24 members for alleged highhandedness and financial recklessness; succeeded by Elizabeth Ativie, the meeting’s first female speaker.
Frank Okiye: ousted in October 2020; Marcus Onobun chosen as replacement.
Delta state
Monday Igbuya: Removed in May 2017 following a vote of no confidence by 22 lawmakers; succeeded by Sheriff Oborevwori.
Ekiti State
Kola Oluwawole: Impeached in October 2018 along with his deputy, Sina Animaun, by 14 members of the House of Representatives.
Gboyega Aribisogan: Removed in 2022 by 17 of the 25 members.
Imo state
Paul Emeziem: deposed in 2021 by 19 of the 27 members; replaced by Kennedy Ibeh.
Katsina State
Aliyu Sabiu Muduru: Expelled in 2017 by 23 of 34 members who supported a vote of no confidence.
Gombe State
Abubakar Ibrahim: deposed in November 2020; Abubakar Luggerewo emerged as the new speaker.
Benue state
Terkimbi Ikyange: removed in 2018; Titus Uba was elected new chairman after a vote of no confidence.
Ebonyi State
Chukwuma Nwazunku: impeached in July 2014 by a majority of more than two-thirds on grounds of incompetence and embezzlement of public funds.
Ondo State
Bamidele Oloyelogun: was impeached in November 2018 along with his deputy, Oladeji Iroju, by 18 of the 26 members on grounds of serious misconduct.
Jigawa State
Idris Garba: Removed in January 2017 due to allegations of highhandedness and abuse of power; re-elected as speaker in May 2019 after the ouster of Isa Idris.
Taraba State
Istifanus Gbana: deposed in 2013 by 17 of the 24 members; replaced by Haruna Tsokwa.
Josiah Sabo Kente: ‘Forced’ to resign in 2014.
Kano State
Yusuf Falgore: deposed in December 2011; Gambo Sallau elected as replacement.
Abdullahi Atta: Removed in July 2018 by 27 lawmakers citing incompetence and corruption.
Kebbi State
Hassan Shalla: ousted in 2015 by 12 of the 24 members for alleged breach of trust and embezzlement.
Isma’il Kamb: Removed in 2021 along with his deputy, Muhammadu Aliyu, after approval by 20 of the 24 members.
Bayelsa State
Emmanuel Tonye Isenah: Deposed in September 2019 after a series of gunshots in the Assembly complex.
Abijah stands
Chinedum Orji: Removed in May 2023 after 18 of the 24 members signed for his ouster.
