Former Barcelona midfielder Andrés Iniesta has urged his former club to sign Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, describing the Nigerian as the ideal long term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Barcelona are in the market for a new centre forward following Lewandowski’s move to Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire earlier this summer.

The Catalan giants had previously considered both Osimhen and Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez as potential replacements but reportedly cooled their interest in the Nigerian due to the financial demands of a possible transfer and his wage expectations.

Speaking to NTV Spor, Iniesta advised Barcelona against deploying teenage sensation Lamine Yamal as a central striker, despite praising the youngster’s immense talent.

He also urged the club’s sporting director, Deco, to strengthen the attack by signing an established goalscorer, with Osimhen emerging as his preferred choice.

“Lamine Yamal is a fantastic player, but I wouldn’t prefer him playing as a number 9. If Ferran Torres leaves, I would strongly advise Deco to sign a striker,” Iniesta said.

“I don’t think Atletico Madrid will let Julian Alvarez go. I would suggest they sign Victor Osimhen. He’s a fantastic goalscorer and one of the best replacements for Robert Lewandowski.”

Osimhen remains one of Europe’s most highly rated strikers after another impressive season, attracting interest from several top clubs across the continent.

Although Barcelona are understood to have stepped back from pursuing the Super Eagles star because of the financial implications of a deal, Iniesta believes the 27 year old has the quality and goalscoring ability to lead the club’s attack for years to come.

Meanwhile, Turkish champions Galatasaray, who were previously open to offers for the Nigerian international, are now reportedly prepared to retain him rather than approve a transfer.
