Iswaran resigned from his role in January after being charged with accepting gifts valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. He arrived at the Supreme Court in a white SUV, offering no comments beyond a brief “good morning” to reporters before the proceedings began at 10 a.m. local time (0200 GMT).
This trial is being closely watched for its political implications, as it could tarnish the image of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) ahead of general elections expected by November 2025. Iswaran, who resigned from the party after being formally charged, pleaded not guilty.

Of the 35 charges against the 62-year-old, most are related to corruption, including an alleged improper government contract, which could carry up to seven years in prison. He also faces one charge of obstruction of justice.
Among the allegations, Iswaran is accused of accepting gifts worth over $300,000, including tickets to high-profile events from Malaysian hotel tycoon Ong Beng Seng, one of Singapore’s wealthiest individuals. Ong, arrested alongside Iswaran in 2023, has not been charged.
