September 7, 2024, marked a tragic day for the family of Mr. David Achinya, particularly for 20-year-old Mrs. Doosuur Achinya, whose husband, Terhile Timothy Achinya, was brutally killed by soldiers attached to Operation Whirl Stroke in Nasarawa State.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the final-year Mechanical Engineering student at Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, was arrested alongside his friend, Olagundoye Favor, on September 6, while heading to an examination hall. Achinya was days away from graduation, but his aspirations were cruelly cut short when the soldiers took him into custody and subjected him to brutal torture, leading to his death. Favor, though severely beaten, survived and was hospitalized.
The military, embarrassed by Achinya’s death, attempted to deposit his body at Dalhatu Arab Specialist Hospital in Lafia, but hospital authorities refused without a police report. Desperate to conceal the incident, the soldiers transferred the body to the Anatomy Department at Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA), where it was accepted for student experiments without proper documentation.
Mrs. Doosuur Achinya, now a widow with two young children, expressed her devastation. “He was supposed to graduate in two days. We had so many plans, but the soldiers killed him and left us with nothing,” she lamented. Her husband had hoped to complete his OND and proceed with further studies, but his dreams, like their future together, were destroyed.
Soldiers Husband Experiments Widow
The bereaved family, including Achinya’s elderly parents, are demanding justice. They have petitioned the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff, seeking the arrest and prosecution of the military officers responsible for his death.
Barrister Ayiwulu Baba, the family’s lawyer, revealed that the soldiers tried to cover up their actions by secretly donating Achinya’s body to FULAFIA. He criticized the university for accepting the corpse without any legal procedures, stating, “They didn’t follow any proper channels. It was an attempt to erase their crime.”
The widow, in her plea, expressed her anguish. “I just want justice for my husband. The soldiers who killed him should be held accountable,” she said.
The case has drawn widespread attention, with calls for a thorough investigation into both the military’s actions and the university’s complicity in the illegal handling of the corpse.
