Sporadic Gunshots As Police, Army Foil Attempted Jailbreak In Edo
- Security operatives on Thursday averted another jailbreak at the Sapele Road Correctional Centre in Edo State.
Ekohotblog reports that there were heavy gunshots as operatives of Correctional Service, Police and Nigerian Army on Thursday foiled attempted jail break by inmates of the correctional centre located along Sapele road in Benin City, Edo State.
It was gathered that there were heavy gunshots at about 12:30pm when some of the awaiting trial inmates, especially those recaptured, had resorted to protest in an attempt to escape but they were stopped by security agents.
Confirming the incident, the public relation officer Correctional Service in State, Aminu Suleman said there was no escape of any inmates or death recorded.

He said: “The attempted jailbreak, which started at 12:30pm, was initiated by a confrontation between some awaiting trial inmates, especially the recaptured escapees, and convicted inmates.”
He revealed that the development led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates.
He disclosed that a reinforcement was immediately mobilised from the state headquarters to enforce law and order.
He said the situation has been brought under control, adding that investigation into the incident has been instituted to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the disturbance.
