Super Eagles Defeat South Africa On Penalties To Advance To AFCON Final
Eko Hot Blog reports that the super eagles of Nigeria have advanced to the final of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
The Eagles record this feet via a 4-1 penalty shootout victory against the Bafana Bafana team after a 1-1 draw after extra time.
William Trost-Ekong had put the Eagles ahead from the penalty spot after Victor Osimhen was fouled in the penalty area.
Victor Osimhen appeared to have doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 85th minutes after guarding home a cross from Bright Osayi. However, the eagles jubilation was cut short following a VAR review of an earlier infringement on a South African player in the eagles penalty Area.
Teboho Momoen restored parity for the Bafana Bafana via the penalty spot. Buoyed by the miraculous comeback, the South Africans troubled the eagles defense for the most part of the extra time.
The South African team was reduced to 10 men late with just six minutes left to play after Grant Kekana made a last minute foul on goal bound Tarem Moffi but the Eagles couldn’t take advantage of their numerical advantage.
The Eagles triumphed on penalties after Tarem Moffi, William Trost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Kelechi Iheanacho all converted their respective Penalty kicks while the Bafana Bafana only managed to score once in three attempts.
Nigeria will now face the winner of the second Semi Final Clash between host nation, Ivory Coast and Congo in the final.
Before today’s achievement, the super eagles last appearance at AFCON Final was in 2013 when the Nigerian team under late coach Stephen Keshi defeated Burkina Faso courtesy of Sunday mbah’s lone goal to claim the trophy.
