What was meant to be a show of support for Tinubu’s second term turned violent when APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, omitted any mention of Shettima in his endorsement speech. He declared Tinubu as the sole 2027 presidential candidate, a move that infuriated delegates.
The venue erupted in chants of “Shettima! Shettima!” before Salihu was physically attacked on stage. A viral video captured him being hit with a chair while others hurled plastic objects. Efforts by senior party leaders, including Deputy National Chairman (North), Bukar Dalori, to control the situation failed, forcing security forces to fire teargas to disperse the crowd.
Outraged Borno delegates described the exclusion of Shettima as a betrayal. “It’s an insult to the entire North-East. We will resist this,” one delegate said. Another warned of possible support for opposition candidates like Atiku Abubakar if Shettima is sidelined.
Gombe Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who hosted the meeting, also came under fire for his vague remarks that praised Tinubu but avoided affirming Shettima. In contrast, Borno Governor Babagana Zulum, Yobe’s Mai Mala Buni, and several lawmakers publicly backed the Tinubu/Shettima ticket.

APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje attempted damage control, saying, “It is one ticket according to the Constitution.” However, his comments failed to appease furious delegates.
Despite denials by presidential aides and APC leaders, speculations remain strong that some internal factions are eyeing a “stronger northern candidate” to replace Shettima.
