Tight Grammy Battle: Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, Ayra Starr Vie For Top Honors
Eko Hot Blog reports that excitement and anticipation have reached fever pitch within the music industry following the introduction of the newly introduced Best African Music Performance category at the prestigious Grammy Awards.
With a diverse array of nominees representing the continent’s rich musical landscape, the competition promises to be intense.

Among the nominees are some of Africa’s most prominent musical talents, including Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, with his track “City Boys”; Olamide Adedeji and Ahmed Ololade, also known as Asake, with their hit “Amapiano”; David Adeleke, better known as Davido, featuring Musa Makamu, aka Musa Key, with the track “Unavailable”; and Oyinkansola Aderigbigbe, known as Ayra Starr, with her song “Rush”. Additionally, South Africa’s Tyla Seethal received a nomination for her single “Water” in the fiercely contested category.
Meanwhile, Temilade Openiyi, aka Tems, earned a nomination in the Best Song Written for Visual Media Category for her work on the song “Lift Me Up,” featured in the film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
The organisers of the Grammy Awards stated that the new category aims to spotlight Africa’s significant influence on global music.
The winner of the inaugural award will be announced during the award ceremony on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, USA.
Davido, nominated in two additional categories—Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance—expressed his excitement for the new category and the recognition it brings to African music.
In an interview with France 24, he remarked, “God’s timing is the best. African music has been dominant for years. I am really happy about this new category, not just for myself but my fellow nominees.”
Similarly, Ayra Starr expressed her readiness for the event, revealing that she already has her Grammy speech and outfit prepared.
Fans eagerly anticipate Burna Boy’s performance at the ceremony, as the Grammy Award-winner received nominations in three categories—Best Melodic Rap, Best Global Music Album, and Best Global Music Performance.
