This move comes in response to widespread concerns from universities, including UNILAG, about the escalating electricity bills they face.
UNILAG, for example, currently spends an average of N350 million monthly on power, a figure that significantly impacts the institution’s budget.
The high tariffs, imposed by power distribution companies, have long been a source of financial strain for public universities, many of which already grapple with funding challenges.
Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education and addressing its pressing issues.
The installation of solar panels is seen as a sustainable solution that not only reduces electricity costs but also contributes to environmental conservation.
The President’s promise reflects a growing recognition of the need for innovative solutions to support higher education institutions and ensure that they remain financially viable.

The solar initiative is part of broader efforts to harness renewable energy sources, which are expected to help stabilize energy costs in the long term, benefiting both educational institutions and the wider community.
As the government works toward implementing these plans, stakeholders in the education sector have expressed optimism that this initiative will help relieve universities of one of their most significant financial burdens.
