Tinubu said the proposed legislation is designed to broaden Nigeria’s tax base, eliminate multiple taxation, and create a more efficient and transparent fiscal system that supports growth and investment.
“I urge you to give urgent consideration to the Tax Reform Bill before you,” Tinubu stated. “We must mobilize domestic resources more efficiently to meet the development aspirations of our people.”
The bill is in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, chaired by Taiwo Oyedele.
The committee was established to overhaul the country’s tax system and make it more equitable, business-friendly, and growth-driven.
The President emphasized that the legislation, once passed, would help reduce dependence on borrowing, increase non-oil revenue, and fund critical infrastructure and social programs.
The Tax Reform Bill is expected to harmonize existing taxes, simplify revenue collection, and empower both federal and subnational governments to improve service delivery—without placing additional burdens on citizens.
Tinubu’s call comes amid broader efforts by his administration to stabilize the economy, attract investment, and promote sustainable development through fiscal reform.
