  • Lucas Bergvall scored the decisive goal, while Liverpool fumed over an unnoticed foul by the 18-year-old.
  • Spurs faced injury setbacks, including Rodrigo Bentancur being stretchered off after a worrying incident.

Tottenham narrowly defeated Liverpool in a controversial finish to their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg. Lucas Bergvall’s late goal gave Spurs a slim advantage to take to Anfield, but Liverpool were left fuming over the 18-year-old’s presence on the pitch when he made the decisive contribution in the 86th minute.

Bergvall, already on a yellow card, caught Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas late in an incident that went unnoticed by referee Stuart Attwell. Tsimikas was still off the field receiving treatment when Bergvall scored moments later, prompting a furious response from Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, who was subsequently booked.

Despite the contentious nature of the win, Spurs were worthy victors after Pedro Porro missed a clear chance, and Dominic Solanke had a goal ruled out for offside. However, Liverpool’s frustration was palpable, especially after suffering only their second defeat under Slot.

Liverpool’s best opportunity came when substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold’s shot was cleared off the line by Radu Dragusin. It was a disappointing performance from the Premier League leaders, who failed to capitalize on their chances.

Tottenham’s victory came despite being already without 10 players due to injury and illness. The match was further marred by an early injury to Rodrigo Bentancur, who went down in the penalty area and was stretchered off wearing a neck brace after 10 minutes of treatment. It was later confirmed that Bentancur was conscious, alert, and undergoing further hospital checks.
