South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been barred from leaving the country, the Ministry of Justice announced on Monday, following a tumultuous week in which he briefly imposed martial law, plunging the nation into political chaos.

On December 3, Yoon deployed special forces and helicopters to parliament under martial law orders. However, lawmakers swiftly rejected his decree, forcing him to revoke the measure.

Despite surviving an impeachment motion in parliament on Saturday, Yoon faces mounting pressure as investigations close in on him and his allies, including a probe into alleged insurrection.

Massive protests have erupted nationwide, with citizens braving freezing temperatures to demand his resignation.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Yoon is the first sitting South Korean president to face a travel ban. During a parliamentary hearing on Monday, Bae Sang-up, an immigration services commissioner, confirmed the ban when asked directly.

Travel bans have also been imposed on several other officials linked to last week’s events, including former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is currently detained, and former interior minister Lee Sang-min.

General Park An-su, who oversaw the martial law operation, and defence counterintelligence commander Yeo In-hyung, have been prohibited from leaving the country.
