EKO HOT BLOG reports that that Khan who is a long-time critic of Trump, reacted strongly after the president appeared to suggest that the London mayor was promoting Sharia law in the UK’s capital.
Speaking in New York on Tuesday, Trump said: “Look at London a terrible mayor, absolutely terrible. The city has changed. Now they want Sharia law… But this isn’t the place for that.”
Reacting during an interview with Sky News on Wednesday, Khan hit back, saying, “President Trump has made it clear through his actions and words that he is racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic.”
Khan, who has served as mayor since 2016 and is a Muslim of Pakistani descent, also pointed to the capital’s strength on global indicators like foreign investment, adding that;
“I’m incredibly proud of London we are the greatest city in the world.”
The Labour Party mayor has frequently clashed with the Republican leader over the years, including during Trump’s presidency.
In 2016, Khan condemned Trump’s proposed travel ban on several Muslim-majority nations, and before Trump’s first state visit to the UK in 2019, compared him to dictators from 20th-century Europe.
Trump, in turn, has labeled Khan a “stone cold loser” and once challenged him to an IQ test.
On Wednesday, Khan told ITV London with a touch of sarcasm: “I think I’ve earned squatters’ rights for how much time I clearly spend in Donald Trump’s head. I just hope he doesn’t send me a bill for the rent.”
Meanwhile, UK government minister Pat McFadden said the U.S. president was “misreading London completely.”
Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer has generally taken a more diplomatic approach to Trump, including hosting him for an unusual second state visit just last week.
