President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly after his inauguration on January 20.

Speaking in an interview with Newsmax, Trump confirmed his intention, stating, “I know he (Putin) wants to meet, and I’m going to meet him very quickly. I would have done it sooner, but you have to get into the office. For some of the things, you do have to be there.”

While no specific date has been set, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted the mutual desire for discussions, describing such a meeting as “very, very necessary and advisable.”

Both leaders are expected to focus on addressing key global issues and fostering dialogue between the U.S. and Russia.

In addition to the anticipated face-to-face meeting, Trump’s incoming National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, hinted that a preliminary phone call between the two leaders might take place in the near future.

Trump’s victory in the November 5, 2024, presidential election marked his return to the White House, having previously served as president from 2017 to 2021.
