Following the public outburst between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, Trump plans to sell the red Tesla he got in March.

Although the car, which is usually parked on West Executive Avenue at the presidential residence, is one of the first likely not the last tangible casualties of the shattered alliance.

In the years before his alliance with Musk, Trump had criticised electric vehicles, claiming that they cost too much and don’t drive far enough.

In 2023 he posted on social media that the plug-in cars should “ROT IN HELL.”

However, following their unlikely partnership, Musk spent about $275 million helping elect Trump in 2024 and was later chosen to lead efforts to slash the federal workforce.

In March, when Tesla began facing backlash over the tech billionaire’s role in the Trump administration, Trump and Musk held an event at the White House touring different Tesla models.

Musk told Trump that the Cybertruck was “bulletproof,” the US President pointed at a bright red Model S instead and went for it.

However, Trump said that the Secret Service would not let him drive the car, adding that it would stay at the White House for his staff to use.

The car having been listed for roughly $80,000, Trump said he would pay with a check, adding that he did not want a discount.

Although presidents generally avoid promoting or endorsing products because executive branch employees are barred from doing so on behalf of friends and relatives, such rules do not apply to Trump, who professed that he was only seeking to help Musk.

Following this, several Teslas arrived on the South Grounds of the White House on March 11, soon after Musk had signalled to Trump advisers that he wanted to give $100 million to groups controlled by the Trump political operation.

However, unlike the car, those funds have yet to be delivered.
