The official portraits of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance have been unveiled ahead of their inauguration on Monday.
Both leaders are dressed in blue suits with white shirts and blue ties, with Trump sporting a small U.S. flag pin on his lapel. The two portraits present strikingly different tones. Trump’s expression is serious, with his head slightly tilted downward, one eyebrow raised, and lips pressed together, while Vance appears more approachable, smiling at the camera with his arms crossed in a casual, confident pose.

Trump’s new portrait has drawn comparisons to his 2023 mugshot, taken in Fulton County Jail following charges related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia—allegations he denied. That mugshot became a key image in Trump’s campaign fundraising efforts.
In a press release, the Trump-Vance transition team described the portraits as ones that “go hard.”
This latest portrait of Trump is notably different from the one released in 2017 during his first presidency. While the attire remains similar, the earlier portrait showed Trump smiling broadly, presenting a more traditional and approachable presidential image.
“Trump may be embracing a defiant image, transforming a moment of legal adversity into a symbol of resilience and strength,” Quardricos Driskell, a political science professor at George Washington University, said.
“The stark contrast to his earlier, more traditional portrait could also signify a shift in his public persona, emphasizing a tougher, more combative stance as he prepares to assume office for a second time.”
