Former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, fell twice at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday and was taken out in a wheelchair as a precaution.
McConnell, who had polio as a child and has faced health problems in recent years, first fell on the stairs near the Senate chamber around midday.

Later, during a Republican lunch, he fell again while carrying a plate of food, landing on his side, according to Punchbowl News.

His spokesperson, Stephanie Penn, said, “Senator McConnell is fine. The lingering effects of polio in his left leg will not disrupt his regular schedule of work.”
McConnell has had several falls before. In 2023, he fell multiple times, suffered a concussion, broke a rib, and froze twice while speaking to reporters. His health has raised concerns about his ability to serve, along with other aging politicians like President Joe Biden and the late Senator Dianne Feinstein.

McConnell was the longest-serving party leader in Senate history, leading from 2007 to 2024. He stepped down last year and was replaced by Senator John Thune, R-S.D.
