Edin Dzeko put Roma in control before the half time break.
Manchester United displayed well after the break as Edinson Cavani scored the leveller, before he fired them ahead.
Former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling push Edinson Cavani inside the penalty area and allowed Bruno Fernandes to add the fourth from the spot.
Paul Pogba scored the fifth with a powerful header from Bruno Fernandes’ cross.
Mason Greenwood gives Manchester United more advantage into the second leg at Roma as he scored the sixth late on.

Elsewhere, Arsenal lost 2-1 at Villarreal, with both sides finishing the game with 10 men.
Arsenal found their self behind when Manu Trigueros fired in the opener for Villarreal before Raul Albiol doubled the lead.
Dani Ceballos was sent off with 30 minutes left after his foul on Daniel Parejo.
Nicolas Pepe gives Mikel Arteta’s side a hope from the spot after a foul on Bukayo Saka.
