Vowles currently serves as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023.

His appointment to Nigeria reflects the United Kingdom’s continued efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations and cooperation with Africa’s most populous nation.
A career diplomat, Vowles has accumulated more than two decades of experience in international development, governance, and foreign affairs across Africa and Asia.
Before his posting in Zimbabwe, he served as Transformation Director at the FCDO between 2022 and 2023 and was previously the UK Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.
His extensive career also includes serving as Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories at the former Department for International Development (DFID), where he oversaw development programmes across several regions.

Vowles has held senior leadership positions in a number of countries, including Kenya, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, where he worked on governance, development, health, and international partnership initiatives.
Prior to joining DFID in 2006, he worked in the development sector as a health and development consultant and also held several programme management positions focused on public health and community development.
Vowles is expected to officially assume duty in Abuja in September, taking over the leadership of the UK diplomatic mission in Nigeria at a time of expanding bilateral engagement between both countries.
