- Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants continues in the UK
UK immigration enforcement teams arrested more than 600 people in January 2025 for working illegally.
This was a 73% increase compared to the same time last year when 352 people were arrested. The arrests were part of the Labour government’s new plan to reduce undocumented migration and stop criminal gangs involved in people smuggling.

According to government officials, immigration officers visited over 800 businesses, including nail salons, restaurants, car washes, and convenience stores, to find and arrest undocumented workers.
Labour Government’s New Approach
When Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer took office last year, he immediately canceled the previous government’s plan to send undocumented migrants to Rwanda. Instead, he promised to focus on breaking up criminal gangs that bring people into the UK illegally.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said that for too long, businesses had been taking advantage of undocumented migrants, and many people were working in the UK illegally without any action being taken.
“We are increasing immigration enforcement to a record level and introducing stronger laws to stop criminal gangs who have been smuggling people across our borders without consequences for too long,” she said.
Why the UK is Taking Action
One of the biggest problems the UK has faced in recent years is the high number of people crossing the English Channel in small, dangerous boats from France. This issue was a key topic during the July 2024 general election, which brought Keir Starmer and the Labour Party to power.
To tackle the problem, the government has created a new Border Security Command to improve border control. They are also working closely with European partners, including Europol, to stop illegal migration before people even reach the UK.
