Eko Hot Blog reports that an undergraduate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), identified simply as Adekunle, was shot dead by armed robbers at Harvey Road, Moore Road Junction, in the Yaba.
According to The PUNCH, the incident occurred when Adekunle and his colleague, Opeyemi, boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG. While inside the vehicle, a man hanging at the back of the bus snatched Opeyemi’s iPhone 7 Plus.
Pained by the development, Opeyemi raised the alarm and Adekunle, in a desperate attempt to retrieve the phone from the robber who jumped down from the bus and fled, pursued him.
As Adekunle closed in on the suspect, an accomplice of the robber suddenly emerged from the shadows and shot the 23-year-old undergraduate.
An eyewitness, who prefers to remain anonymous for security reasons, recounted the incident. According to the witness, the robber’s accomplice shot Adekunle at close range on the left side of his head, resulting in his immediate death. Found on Adekunle’s person was an ATM card bearing his name.
The witness further revealed that Opeyemi, who identified herself as a student of Business Administration at UNILAG, stated that she and Adekunle had boarded the shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG. It was during this journey that she was robbed of her iPhone 7 Plus by a thief hanging at the back of the bus.
Opeyemi recounted that Adekunle attempted to help by pursuing the robber. However, during the chase, another group of individuals appeared, and one of them tragically shot Adekunle at close range on the left side of his head, leading to his immediate demise.
A photograph obtained by our correspondent showed Adekunle lying motionless on the ground at the crime scene, dressed in a black top and trousers. The image captured the blood that had flowed from his head, as well as a polybag and his slippers nearby.
Upon arrival at the crime scene, the police evacuated Adekunle’s body and transferred it to a morgue at the Mainland Hospital. The Lagos State Police Command has initiated an investigation to apprehend the suspects responsible for the attack.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the deceased was a UNILAG student. He assured that the command is actively pursuing the suspects and has been in contact with the victim’s family. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for a thorough investigation.
The spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibrahim, declined to provide immediate comments on the matter, requesting a formal request via email to the communication unit or an in-person interview with the Dean of Student Affairs.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the security challenges faced by students and individuals in the country. It highlights the need for increased efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens, particularly in public spaces.
