In an exclusive interview with USA Today, outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden expressed confidence that he could have defeated Donald Trump for re-election in November but acknowledged doubts about his ability to endure another four-year term.

“So far, so good,” Biden, 82, said. “But who knows what I’ll be like at 86?”

The wide-ranging interview covered topics including potential pardons for political figures and Biden’s thoughts on his age and legacy.

He revealed he is still considering pre-emptive pardons for figures like former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney and ex-health official Dr. Anthony Fauci, both prominent critics of Trump.

Biden said he discussed the matter with Trump during a post-election Oval Office meeting, describing the conversation as straightforward.

“I tried to make it clear that settling scores wasn’t in his best interest,” Biden said, noting Trump listened without pushback.

The president also shared that Trump was complimentary about his economic record during the meeting, reportedly telling Biden, “You’re leaving with a good record.”

Biden’s USA Today interview marks his only exit interview with a print publication, as media access to him has been tightly controlled since he withdrew from the race in July.

The president has not held a news conference since his announcement.

Biden defended his controversial decision to issue a full and unconditional pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who faced charges of tax evasion and illegal gun purchases.

While he had previously insisted he would not intervene, Biden said he acted in the interest of his family.

Reflecting on his political career and the November election, Biden admitted his age may have influenced public perception and his ability to lead effectively.

“When Trump was running again, I believed I had the best chance of beating him,” Biden said. “But I wasn’t looking to be president at 85 or 86. Who the hell knows what’s ahead?”

Biden faced criticism from within the Democratic Party for delaying his decision to drop out of the race, with some arguing it hurt the party’s chances in the election.

Following Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to Trump, senior Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, suggested Biden’s earlier exit might have improved their prospects.
