EKO HOT BLOG reports that the documents are expected to shed more light on Epstein’s links with influential figures in business, politics, and entertainment, including US President Donald Trump.
Epstein, a disgraced financier, died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal s3x trafficking charges.
President Trump, who was once a close associate of Epstein, had for months resisted the release of the records before eventually bowing to pressure from Congress, including members of his Republican Party. He signed a law last month mandating the publication of the files.
Friday marked the deadline set by Congress for the release of the documents.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in an interview on Fox and Friends that several hundred thousand documents were released on Friday, with hundreds of thousands more expected in the coming weeks.
Blanche explained that prosecutors retained the authority to withhold materials connected to ongoing investigations. He added that extensive redactions would be made to protect the identities of Epstein’s victims.
He said no new criminal charges were expected from the release.
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticised the partial disclosure, accusing the Trump administration of failing to comply fully with the law.
“The Trump administration had 30 days to release all the Epstein files, not just some,” Schumer said, describing the move as a cover up to shield the president.
Trump’s relationship with Epstein dates back to the 1990s when both moved within elite social circles in Palm Beach and New York. Trump severed ties with Epstein years before his arrest and has not been accused of wrongdoing.
Epstein’s former partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, remains the only person convicted in the case. She is serving a 20 year prison sentence for recruiting underage girls.
The release of the files is seen as the most significant step yet toward clarifying how Epstein operated and why legal action against him was delayed for years.
