US Vice President JD Vance delivered a blistering critique of European democracies at the Munich Security Conference, claiming the greatest threats to the continent stem from within rather than from Russia or China.

While expectations were high for Vance to address peace talks on Ukraine, he instead accused European governments, including the UK of abandoning their core values, stifling free speech, and mishandling migration. His remarks, met with silence, were later condemned by several leaders, with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius calling them “unacceptable.”

Vance reiterated the Trump administration’s call for Europe to bolster its own defence and suggested that a “reasonable settlement” in Ukraine was possible following Donald Trump’s recent announcement of planned negotiations with Vladimir Putin.

However, his speech largely veered into culture-war territory, echoing themes from Trump’s presidential campaign. He accused EU “commissars” of suppressing dissent, condemned Germany’s political firewall against the far-right AfD party, and criticized the UK over a legal case involving an army veteran convicted for praying outside an abortion clinic.

The speech sparked swift backlash. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas accused Vance of “picking a fight” with allies, while former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul labeled his remarks “insulting.” Meanwhile, AfD’s chancellor candidate Alice Weidel praised his words as “excellent.”

Vance also dismissed concerns over election interference in Romania, where the presidential vote was annulled due to alleged Russian meddling, saying, “If your democracy can be destroyed with a few $100,000 of digital advertising from a foreign country, then it wasn’t very strong to begin with.”

Despite the controversy, Vance later met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, discussing the need for further planning to end the war. However, Moscow declined to send a delegation to the conference, despite Trump’s earlier claim that peace talks would take place there.
