The assault, described by officials as “another massive Russian attack,” marks the latest chapter in Moscow’s continued efforts to cripple Ukraine’s energy sector during the three-year-long conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the extent of the damage in an emotional statement on social media, declaring, “It’s the middle of winter, and the target for the Russians remains unchanged: our energy infrastructure.”

Local authorities reported that dozens of missiles and drones were unleashed in the overnight onslaught.

Despite the formidable challenge, Ukraine’s air defenses managed to intercept over 30 of the 40 missiles, along with numerous drones, averting what could have been an even greater catastrophe.

Zelenskyy highlighted that the attacks targeted critical gas and energy facilities essential to sustaining normal life for millions of Ukrainians.

The timing of the strikes, coinciding with freezing temperatures, underscores the vulnerability of civilians caught in the crossfire of geopolitical tensions.

The overnight offensive serves as a grim reminder of the human cost of war, with families forced to endure freezing conditions and communities left without essential resources.
