- Taliban deployed pepper sprays and tear gas to disperse protesters as they marched towards the presidential palace.
EkohotBlog reports that in recent weeks, the Taliban had sent mixed signals about the place of women in Afghan society with the ban of women in public institutions and workplaces immediately after the group took over the country.
Dozens of women took to the streets of the capital on Saturday to demand their right to work, a role in any future government, and a seat at the table in discussions with the Taliban.

The women, 50 in number protested and made demands from the group. However, Razia Barakzai, aged 26, revealed that the women were stopped near the entrance to the finance ministry, where the Taliban “surrounded” them and kept them from continuing on their march towards the palace entrance.
Barakzai narrated that the Taliban had deployed both pepper spray and tear gas to disperse the crowd. She said “We were calm and peaceful the entire time, but they just wanted to stop us at any cost,” she told Al Jazeera in an interview monitored by our reporter.
The Saturday’s demonstration pegged at least the fourth time women in Afghanistan and the western city of Herat have gathered to demand their rights in a future Taliban-led government.
The crowd was surrounded on all four sides by the Taliban forces, who informed the crowd to “Go home, each of you one by one.” However, getting out after the encirclement proved to be difficult since the Taliban continued to surround them.
“It was strange, they didn’t want us to stay, but they also wouldn’t let us leave,” Barakzai said.
Barakzai also expressed worry over one of the women that was struck by the Taliban forces.
