The Zamfara State Government has sounded a warning over the increasing deforestation caused by illegal tree felling for charcoal production.

This environmental crisis has heightened concerns about desertification and soil erosion in the state.

In a statement issued by Abubakar Aliyu, Information Officer for the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Commissioner for Environment, Kasimu Sani Kaura, condemned the practice of cutting trees to produce charcoal.

He described it as a significant threat to ongoing efforts to curb environmental degradation.

“Deforestation undermines our ecosystem, leading to worsening desertification and soil erosion. The rampant cutting of trees is not sustainable and jeopardizes the future of Zamfara,” Kaura said.

The Commissioner outlined the essential role trees play in mitigating climate change, explaining that they absorb carbon dioxide, store carbon, and release oxygen into the atmosphere.

He urged residents to abandon indiscriminate tree felling and support the state’s conservation efforts.

Kaura further highlighted the government’s commitment to combating deforestation through environmental initiatives.

However, he stressed the need for collective action from the public to ensure these measures succeed.

Residents were encouraged to adopt alternative energy sources and participate in reforestation projects to secure a sustainable future for Zamfara.
