Zenith Bank Appoints Dr. Adaora Umeoji As First Female GMD
Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a groundbreaking move, Zenith Bank Plc has appointed Dr. Adaora Umeoji as its new Group Managing Director, effective June 1, 2024.
This appointment marks a significant milestone as Umeoji becomes the first female GMD in the bank’s history.

The announcement was made through a statement signed by the company secretary, Michael Otu, and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday. Umeoji will take over from the current GMD, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, whose tenure expires on May 31.
“Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji is the first female GMD/CEO since the inception of the bank, and her appointment is consistent with the bank’s executive transition tradition, succession plan, and strategy of grooming leaders from within,” the statement read.
Umeoji brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as the Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank since October 28, 2016. She boasts nearly 30 years of banking experience, with 26 years spent at Zenith Bank.
According to her profile, Umeoji is an alumnus of prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, where she attended the Advanced Management Programme, and Columbia Business School, where she obtained a Certificate in the Global Banking Program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Jos, a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and a first-class honours degree in law from Baze University, Abuja.
Umeoji’s academic credentials also include a Master of Laws from the University of Salford, United Kingdom, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Calabar, and a doctorate in business administration from Apollos University, USA. Additionally, she holds a Certificate in Economics for Business from the MIT Sloan School of Management, USA, and has attended various management programmes at renowned universities worldwide, including the strategic thinking and Management programme at Wharton Business School, USA.

With her appointment, Umeoji joins the ranks of female bank MDs in Nigeria, setting a new precedent for Zenith Bank, one of the country’s largest asset banks. At the close of trading on Tuesday, Zenith Bank was valued at N1.19 trillion, with its shares priced at N38.1 per unit.
Umeoji’s appointment as the first female GMD of Zenith Bank is a significant milestone in the Nigerian banking industry, reflecting the bank’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and nurturing leadership from within.
