EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to top security sources who spoke to Punch, the discovery directly connects the detained officer to the suspected plot to overthrow the government.
Investigators reveal that the colonel, who previously served under a brigadier general also under probe, was earlier deployed to the Niger Delta region.
“When interrogated, the colonel claimed that the funds belonged to a former governor, whom he described as his business partner. He insisted that the money was meant for a legitimate business transaction,” one of the security officers said.
Sources disclosed that the investigation forms part of a broader operation that began after intelligence reports in August 2024 indicated that some serving officers were plotting a coup against the Federal Government.
Security agencies, led by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), reportedly began tracking financial flows, communication exchanges, and foreign meetings involving the suspects months before the arrests.
“The suspects have been under surveillance since August 2024. Intelligence showed they planned to strike on three occasions June 12, Democracy Day; October 1, Independence Day; and another undisclosed date. They even held meetings in the UK and Turkey. But the DIA waited to gather solid evidence before moving in,” a source explained.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue tracing the financial network behind the alleged plot and identifying additional collaborators.
