12 Inmates Escape Kogi Prison in Early Morning Jailbreak

Twelve inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, following a coordinated early morning jailbreak. Authorities have launched a manhunt to recapture the escapees, all of whom are Awaiting Trial Inmates (ATI).

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the National Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred on Monday morning. According to the National Spokesman of the NCoS, Abubakar Umar, two of the escapees have already been recaptured, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining ten.

“We are deploying all available search mechanisms to track and rearrest the fleeing inmates,” Umar stated. He assured the public that security forces were working tirelessly to prevent further security threats posed by the escape.

Tragically, during the jailbreak, a correctional officer lost his life. Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding his death, but an investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the incident.

The Kogi State Government has also confirmed the jailbreak. The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, issued a statement acknowledging the security breach and assuring residents that the situation is under control.
