The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to educational development and global collaboration during the Commonwealth Day commemoration held at the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, themed “Together We Thrive,” Dr. Alausa emphasized the significance of the Commonwealth’s core values—democracy, human rights, and social progress—while highlighting the crucial role education plays in fostering national and global prosperity.

He noted that Nigeria, as a member of the Commonwealth, enjoys numerous benefits, including access to a global network of trade partners and fully funded scholarships that allow Nigerian students to study at top universities abroad.
Additionally, there are partially funded scholarships available for a variety of courses, further expanding educational opportunities.
The minister highlighted the impact of the Commonwealth Youth Council, which empowers young Nigerians through leadership training, entrepreneurship support, and networking opportunities.
He urged adolescents and young people aged 15-29 to take advantage of these initiatives by actively participating in community development and leadership roles.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving education, Dr. Alausa outlined ongoing collaborations with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL).
These partnerships focus on Technical and Vocational Education, Open and Distance Learning (ODL), and Open Educational Resources (OER).
He noted that open schooling initiatives, supported by COL, are being implemented in vulnerable states to address the growing challenge of out-of-school children. Other key reforms include blended learning in schools, curriculum revisions, and a renewed focus on skill acquisition to equip students for the modern workforce.
Dr. Alausa stressed the importance of inclusivity in education, urging all stakeholders—including students, teachers, parents, and government agencies—to work together in driving reforms.
He emphasized that quality education is fundamental to national development and called for more investments in technology-driven learning solutions to tackle global challenges such as climate change, health crises, and economic inequalities.
“The digitalization and digitization of education are critical to ensuring Nigeria remains competitive on the global stage,” he stated. “Education must evolve to prepare our citizens with the necessary skills, knowledge, and mindset to thrive in a rapidly changing world.”
Concluding his address, the minister expressed confidence that this year’s Commonwealth Day commemoration would strengthen Nigeria’s partnerships in the education sector and drive sustainable reforms.
