The unnamed defendant pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree murder and home invasion robbery, specifically acknowledging that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm during the incident in February 2020.
The presiding judge has issued a court order to protect the defendant’s identity due to his minor status at the time of the shooting. He is expected to be held in a juvenile facility until the age of 25.
The 18-year-old individual was one of four individuals charged in connection with the killing of Pop Smoke, whose birth name was Bashar Barakah Jackson.
The rapper was staying in a rented residence in the Hollywood Hills when the fatal incident occurred.
Another accomplice, who was 17 years old at the time, was sentenced to four years and two months in a juvenile facility after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and home invasion robbery just one month ago, as reported by the Associated Press.
The Los Angeles Times revealed that Pop Smoke, during a four-day trip to Los Angeles, inadvertently disclosed his address on Instagram, leading to the break-in at his rental home.
It was during this invasion that the assailants entered the rapper’s bedroom while he was in the shower. They proceeded to pistol-whip him and fired three shots into his back. Additionally, the perpetrators reportedly stole Pop Smoke’s watch, later selling it for $2,000.
Pop Smoke, recognized for popularizing the Brooklyn drill sound, achieved widespread acclaim following the release of his 2019 single “Welcome to the Party.”
He further solidified his presence in the music scene with two mixtapes, “Meet the Woo” in 2019 and “Meet the Woo 2” in 2020. Tragically, his debut album, “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon,” was released posthumously in July 2020, after his untimely death.
The confession by the 18-year-old defendant has brought a sense of closure to the case, shedding light on the tragic circumstances surrounding the loss of a rising star in the music industry.
