He said the operation was part of ongoing efforts by the Navy to curb drug trafficking and enhance security in Lagos and its coastal communities.
According to him, the Base Quick Response Team, in collaboration with Operation MESA personnel, acted on credible intelligence in the early hours of Thursday, October 2, 2025, to intercept the van, which had a foreign registration number.
“Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to be carrying 20 bags of suspected cannabis weighing approximately 840 kilograms,” Udoesien said.
He added that the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene when they sighted the patrol team.
“The vehicle and the cannabis sativa have been handed over to the Marine Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Lagos Command, for further investigation,” he said.
Captain Udoesien noted that the interception was part of the Navy’s sustained campaign under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to combat illicit maritime activities, including drug trafficking and smuggling through Nigeria’s waterways.

He reiterated the Navy’s commitment to supporting internal security operations and collaborating with other security agencies to safeguard the nation’s maritime environment.
“The Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft will continue to intensify surveillance, patrols, and intelligence-driven operations to deny criminals freedom of action within Lagos waterways and adjoining creeks,” he said.
He commended the vigilance and professionalism of naval personnel and urged the public to provide timely and credible information that could help improve security across Lagos State.
