The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has justified his earlier decision to support President Bola Tinubu.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Wike stated this on Wednesday during the flag-off ceremony of the main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway in Abuja. He said those who previously accused him of undermining the PDP and working for the APC were now openly joining the ruling party.

“I have been watching daily on television and social media those who said I wanted to destabilise the PDP and that I was working for the APC. All of them are now in the APC. So, if it is true that I worked for them, they should commend me for doing a good job,” he said.
Within the last 48 hours, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri resigned from the PDP to join the APC. Mbah said his defection was in the interest of national development, while Diri made the move alongside 19 Bayelsa lawmakers. Their exit reduces the PDP’s number of governors from 11 in October 2024 to eight as of today.
Wike also commended President Tinubu for what he described as “decisive and result-driven leadership,” especially in managing the nation’s economy. He said the President’s policies had made it easier for states and the FCT to meet financial obligations without depending on loans.
“Let every state be sincere to their people. I was a governor for eight years, and sometimes, the monthly allocation was not enough to pay salaries, not to mention projects. Today, under the leadership of someone who took decisive steps, all states and the FCT no longer run to banks for survival. Rather, banks now approach the states,” Wike said.
He further described the defections to APC as a “worthwhile” move, noting that governors now have better financial management systems and would no longer leave huge debts for their successors.

“Now, no governor will talk about leaving debts for his successor, unlike before. That’s the kind of visionary and purposeful leadership this country needs—leadership that takes bold decisions others were afraid to take,” Wike added.
