EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the incident on X, the suspect confessed that both he and the victim had taken an oath never to part ways. However, after the relationship ended, Faruq allegedly became enraged and attacked the woman.
Eyewitnesses said the suspect doused Omolola with petrol before setting her ablaze. Alert military personnel at the barracks intervened swiftly, extinguishing the fire and rushing the victim to Yawiri Hospital, Akobo, for urgent treatment.
Makama stated, “The suspect, angered by the breakdown of their relationship, set the lady on fire after claiming they had sworn never to separate. Soldiers at the scene rescued her and handed the suspect over for investigation.”
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, said investigations were ongoing.
“Investigation is ongoing,” Osifeso said in a brief message to PUNCH Metro.
Incidents of relationship-related violence have become a growing concern across Nigeria. In July 2025, a Uniport student, Cynthia Chukwundah, reportedly set her lover on fire following a quarrel over a pregnancy dispute. In another case in January 2023, a man in Rivers State strangled and burned his partner over alleged infidelity.
Similarly, in April 2023, police in Ogun State arrested a 43-year-old man for setting his ex-lover’s apartment ablaze after she refused to reconcile.

These recurring cases highlight the rising trend of emotional violence in intimate relationships and the urgent need for increased awareness, counselling, and intervention mechanisms to prevent such tragedies.
