The Nigerian Correctional Service has suspended several officers at a custodial centre in Yobe State over allegations of unprofessional conduct involving inmates.
The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
The Service’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections J. N. Osuji, announced the development on Tuesday, confirming that the affected officers have been issued formal queries demanding explanations for their actions.
Osuji said the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after reviewing a preliminary report submitted to his office.
The minister expressed strong displeasure over the incident, noting that the Federal Government would not tolerate any behaviour capable of undermining discipline within security and correctional institutions.
The statement added that the Service maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance toward misconduct, negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates.
Tunji-Ojo stated that any officer found culpable would face disciplinary action and possible legal consequences in line with existing regulations.
The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, also assured Nigerians of the Service’s commitment to upholding professionalism and accountability. He said custodial centres across the country would continue to operate strictly within the law and established ethical standards.
Nwakuche emphasised that all personnel are expected to maintain the highest level of integrity while carrying out their duties.
