EKO HOT BLOG reports that the President, in a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said the action was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s national security structure and ensure more effective coordination among the armed forces.
Under the new appointments, former Chief of Army Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has been named Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa. Major-General W. Shaibu is now the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes the Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas takes charge as the Chief of Naval Staff. The Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retained his position.
Military sources revealed that the development will lead to mass retirements within the armed forces, as officers who are seniors or contemporaries of the newly appointed chiefs are traditionally expected to proceed on voluntary retirement. Reports indicate that no fewer than 50 generals may be affected by the shake-up.
It was gathered that the newly appointed service chiefs are from Course 40 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), succeeding their predecessors from Course 39. Under established military convention, officers from senior courses cannot serve under juniors, which means many generals from Courses 39 and 40 will have to leave the service.

According to Leadership Weekend, several officers from Course 39 still occupy strategic positions such as Principal Staff Officers at Service Headquarters and Commanders of tri-service institutes. With the President’s latest decision, a significant leadership transition is expected across the military.
