Newcastle United have won their first domestic trophy in 70 years by defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Thousands of Newcastle fans traveled to London to watch their team break their long trophy drought. Newcastle’s last domestic win was the FA Cup in 1955, although they won the European Inter-City Fairs Cup in 1969.

Liverpool, the defending champions and current Premier League leaders, were favorites to win. They recently beat Newcastle 2-0 in the league and have won 38 major trophies since Newcastle’s last domestic success.
In the first half, Newcastle took the lead when local player Dan Burn scored a header just before halftime. Although they had a second goal disallowed for offside, Alexander Isak doubled their lead soon after.

Liverpool scored a late goal in stoppage time through Federico Chiesa, but Newcastle held on to win.
Eddie Howe became the first English manager to win a domestic trophy since Harry Redknapp in 2008. The match was played in front of 88,513 fans.
After the game, Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes called it “one of the best days” of his life and said the fans deserved the victory.
