World Cup
Home Advantage
Its no secret, hosting the World Cup gives you an advantage over the rest, out of eight champions, six have won it at home.
In 2002, the World Cup hosts South Korea were favoured excessively. The Knock – out rounds against Italy and Spain remains the most embarrassing and scandalous refereeing in World Cup history.
Spain suffered after the Referee ruled out two golden goals and Italy, when the referee ignored a decisive penalty that ought to had been retaken after the South Korean Goalkeeper moved out of the goal-line.
It was so obvious that even the Former Fifa President Sepp Blatter criticized the Referee.
The Goal That Wasn’t
In 1966, an action packed match between England and rival side Germany. The two competitively hunted for a tie breaker in a 2-2 draw that needed to be decided on extra time. In the 11th minute, Jeff Astle hit the crossbar and the ball ended up bouncing off the pitch.
The Referee approved it when it clearly didn’t go in, and that is how England won their first and only World Cup title.
The Hand Of God
In 1986, Diego Maradona scored two unforgettable goals against England, one with pure magical talent. He actually scored with his hand.
The Tunisian referee officiating the match later admitted he wasn’t well positioned to see what had actually happened and as his assistant said nothing about it, he gave the goal.
A goal which saw England quit the World Cup unfairly. Maradona on his side claimed he didn’t score with his hand but the hand of God, hence the infamous phrase “The Hand of God.”
Mexico Curse
Mexico had always exited the World Cup in the round of 16, seven times in a row. In 2010 they faced off against their least favourite team in the World, Argentina.
Though Messi and company trashed them scoring three goals in the first half, they firmly believed this was bias – belted caused by referees who were always against them.
