Shittu, who served during Buhari’s first term, clarifies that the report was never presented to the administration, thus rendering it irrelevant for implementation. He states, “If nobody brought it and there were no complaints, we didn’t have cause to look at it at all.”
The report, which resurfaced after 12 years with the government’s recent approval for some recommendations’ implementation, stirred controversy. Notably, plans to merge twenty-nine government agencies and subsume eight parastatals into others have sparked concerns about potential job losses among Nigerians.
Tommy Etim, the National President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, warns against job losses amidst the nation’s hardships, fearing possible mass protests.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, labels the report outdated, cautioning against exacerbating insecurity through mass retrenchment.
In response, the Federal Government inaugurated an implementation committee, reassuring civil servants about job security. Shittu emphasizes that only politicians would be affected, highlighting the need to streamline services to reduce governance costs.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Yusuf Ali, underscores the benefits of implementing the report, citing the reduction of administrative complexities and inter-agency rivalries. He assures that merging agencies doesn’t necessarily mean job losses but rather a more efficient government structure.
