In the heart of an ancient land, where the echoes of traditions reverberate through the ages, a lone voice rises, its lamentations resonating like a clarion call amidst the cacophony of modernity. This voice belongs to me, Tijani Ezekiel, a son of Africa whose soul is steeped in the rich tapestry of my forebears’ wisdom and a witness to the gradual erosion of the virtues that once defined the very essence of our being.
From the verdant landscapes of the Yoruba land to the rolling hills of Igbo territories and the arid expanses of Hausa domains, I have borne witness to the sacred rite of a woman’s purity on her wedding night – a tradition that was once the very lifeblood of our cultural identity. With a heart heavy with nostalgia, I recall the reverence that surrounded this tradition, a moment of immense pride not just for the bride but for her family and the entire community. On the night of her marriage, the virginity of the young woman was confirmed by her elders, a symbolic affirmation of her adherence to the teachings of our ancestors – teachings that had been woven into the fabric of our existence since time immemorial.
Yet, in the contemporary era, the winds of change have brought with them a tempest that threatens to unravel the very threads that bind us to our heritage. I bear witness to the gradual decline in the importance placed on these sacred traditions, as even public figures and celebrities boldly proclaim their desire to become single mothers, without the sanctity of matrimony. The seeds of this moral decay took root in the Western world, where the concepts of personal freedom and individual choice began to overshadow the collective wisdom of our forebears.
Like an insidious virus, this mindset found its way into the heart of our beloved Nigeria, carried on the wings of globalization and the allure of modernity. Slowly but surely, the once-unshakable foundations of our cultural values began to crumble as the younger generation, seduced by the siren call of perceived liberation, embraced a lifestyle that would have been unthinkable to our ancestors.
Celebrities, those beacons of influence, became unwitting harbingers of this moral decay, their actions and words carrying the weight of endorsement. With each bold declaration of their desire for single parenthood, they inadvertently normalized a concept that once would have been met with shock and disdain. And in their wake, a generation of impressionable minds followed, emboldened by the notion that this was the new normal, a testament to their supposed freedom and progressivism.
Those of us who dared to raise our voices in dissent were met with scorn and ridicule, branded as “old school” or “stuck in the past.” Our warnings fell on deaf ears, drowned out by the deafening chorus of those who celebrated this new era of supposed enlightenment, oblivious to the insidious erosion of the very principles that had sustained our people for generations.
As I gaze into the future, a chill runs down my spine, for I fear the consequences of this unraveling of our cultural fabric. What awaits the generations to come if we continue down this path of moral decay? Will they know the pride and joy of upholding the sacred traditions that once defined us? Or will they be lost in a sea of indulgence and excess, untethered from the anchors of wisdom that have guided our people through the ages?
I shudder to imagine a world where the sanctity of marriage is but a distant memory, where the bonds of family and community are frayed beyond repair, and where the virtues of discipline, honor, and respect for tradition are mere relics of a bygone era. A world where the echoes of our ancestors’ wisdom are drowned out by the cacophony of self-indulgence and a reckless pursuit of fleeting pleasures.
My heart aches with a pain that words can scarcely describe, for I fear that if we do not act now if we do not stem the tide of this moral decay, we risk losing the very essence of our identity as Africans. We risk becoming a hollow shell, bereft of the rich tapestry of values that have sustained us through countless trials and tribulations.
It is with this fear, this pain, and this anger that I implore you, my brothers and sisters, to heed my call. Let us not forsake the virtues of our ancestors in the pursuit of fleeting trends. Let us embrace the timeless values that have guided us through the ages, illuminating our path even in the darkest of nights. Let us instill in our youth the importance of these moral principles, reminding them of the beauty and wisdom ingrained in our traditions.
For it is only through the harmonious interplay of tradition and modernity that we can truly honor our past while paving the way for a future that reflects the richness of our heritage – a future where the echoes of our ancestors’ wisdom resonate through the generations to come, guiding us towards a destiny steeped in the timeless virtues that have been the bedrock of our existence.
My clarion call is a rallying cry to preserve that which has defined us, a desperate plea to embrace the ever-evolving nature of society while holding fast to the principles that have weathered the storms of time. For if we fail in this endeavor, we risk losing not only our cultural identity but also the very soul of our people, leaving us adrift in a sea of moral decay, bereft of the anchors that have guided us through the ages.
